Chapter 19

After an hour, Nicky C called for his guys to take five. They had been running at a ten kilometer per hour pace. He checked his team to be sure they were all doing well. He also made sure none of their equipment was bouncing loose. He didn’t want to get to the settlement and discover something they needed had fallen out at the start.

Everyone on the team was in good spirits. They felt like they had run around the block rather than ten kilometers. Nicky made sure everyone drank water and had a power bar. After five minutes they were ready to go once again.

Nicky checked his suit’s computer. His readout showed that they had 31 kilometers to go, as the crow flies. Unfortunately, there were no crows on Axe Head. He gave the order and this time Jason took the lead with Tommy following. Everyone maintained a comfortable ten kilometers per hour.

The terrain for this leg of the trek was the toughest. They would travel laterally as much as forward to avoid several of the taller hills. In the CIC, Chris was monitoring their progress and was in constant contact with Nicky. A revised estimate of their pace put their time of travel at five rather than four hours. Still well within mission parameters.

I had made sure that I was not scheduled to man the bridge during the ingress. I want to be at the helm when the actual infiltration of the settlement began, and during the race back to the shuttle. I was ready for the worst. I decided to stop into the large galley and say hello to everyone. As I walked in I could hear Julie and Chris talking with Chef Paula and a few of Nicky’s guys. I grabbed a soft drink and joined them at the table.

Julie commented on the speed the snatch team was covering the ground. “Those power suits are amazing. You say that they are moving at 10kph and it feels like they are at a slow jog.”

Chris nodded. “I know; it amazes me too. Just a short time ago, the distance they are covering today, would have been two hard days of travel. Now they should arrive at the settlement in two hours. They will feel tired but no more than if they had a good day of PT on Oakdale.”

Chef Paula added to the conversation. “If those suits had the reactive camo built into them they would be almost invisible as they cross an open field.”

Julie liked that idea. “Chris, we are going to work on just that when we get back home. It would make them blend in with their background and safer. If that doesn’t come under my responsibility I don’t know what does.”

Chris acknowledged Julie’s remark. “You’re right. It does fall under your position. I’m glad you’re taking an active role. If we can get that to work, our guys could just walk into an area without anyone seeing a thing. Paula, great idea. Julie, I want you to run with it.
